Christmas Tree Ornaments

Santa pouring coal from his sack instead of toys.

HOME

These beautiful pieces of coal are smaller than the lumps we put in the bags. They weigh from about .75 to 1.75 ounces. We finish them with a gloss acrylic fixative because we figure a gloss—but not too shiny—finish will look best with Christmas tree lights. We drill a really, really, really tiny hole in the coal (less than a millimeter), and glue a loop of very thin, very strong, gold-colored flexible wire in the hole with tiny amounts of a special type of epoxy. We add a red glass bead as a ‘collar’ around the wire— just to add some festive holiday color. If you don’t want a festive look—if you're a Puritan or a Modernist or a Minimalist, for example, you can easily slide the red glass bead off the wire. Or you can replace the bead with another of your choosing.

This is an absolutely perfect gift for your friends and family who just plain like unusual Christmas tree ornaments. Of course, it’s also perfect if you want to send a message to the recipient, but you’re afraid the bag of lumps sends too strong a message. The bag of lumps is great for people—say, children or politicians—who need a straightforward, unambiguous message: “You’ve been BAD!” Others deserve a gentle prod, a seed of doubt: “Have I been bad?” The ornament sends a much subtler message than the bag of lumps—perfect for creating ambiguity in the mind of your recipient.

The ornament also leaves you lots of room for deniability: “I didn’t give you the coal ornament because you’ve been a jerk. I just thought it was an unusual, witty, pretty Christmas tree decoration. Don’t be paranoid!”

Like the bags of coal, each ornament comes with the gift card (4.25 inches wide by 2.75 inches tall). Close-up of gift card with Santa pouring coal out of his bag (click for larger image)

Gift Packaging Included: We wrap each ornament in red tissue paper and green excelsior (or green tissue paper and red excelsior) and place it in a 3-inch square gift box. We handstamp our Two Lumps of Coal.com logo on the inside of the lid, so there’s nothing on the outside of the box. You can simply put a ribbon on it as is, or it’s ready to wrap.

We didn't have any Christmas trees to hang our ornaments in yet. So . . . we wondered how they would look in the local cacti.
